43. Hi guys, a question re jobs??
Have looked at some Aussi jobs online (as am considering moving over) and they say you must have aus residency to apply. Does this affect nzers moving there, as i understand it, you apply for residency when you get there and it takes about 2 yrs? From your experiences is it harder to get jobs because of this?

pohutukawagirl (35 ) 10:40 am, 30 Jun
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

44. No need to apply for residency
and there are no restrictions on getting a job just because you are a kiwi. We don't intend of applying of residence till we want to.

53. Best area of Kal??
As the schools are zoned, I'm wondering what areas we should be looking at and what areas to avoid. Or is it a case of being lucky to get a place to rent/buy, take what you can get? Thanks in advance

fonsay (211 ) 1:10 pm, 30 Jun
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

54. there you all are
I post in another thread and that disappeared as well. Hi I am pet, I moved from the Hawke's Bay 28 years ago. Spent about 12 months in Vic the rest in Qld. Have been in the wet tropics since 1985. I love Australia, our scenery and the laid back life style. I work 2 part time jobs and love them both. Cheers all. At least I found you all again. Have fun everyone.

55. Hi...
we moved from Featherston to Kalgoorlie just over a year ago now, and love it!!! My girls aged 10 and 5 settled in straight away and also love it here. Emma hang in there it does take awhile to get use to things and find friends, but once you are sorted things will be fine. Hi alpha, its a lovely day here, bit cold this morning but nice now. Thanks for the wishes for tomorrow, getting just a tad nervous now.Fonsay, each area in Kal has its good bits and bad bits, we live in Fairways and its great, but my kids go to Boulder Primary, the high end parts of town are Lamington, Hannans and Somerville and O'Connor, just depends on how much you are willing to pay in rent or to purchase a house, but the rest are just really down to earth parts of town, like South Kal, Boulder or even now where milly lives they have nicknamed it golden grove, is a go ahead place now, milly has an awesome house. Hope I gave you some ideas.

57. Thanks weena
I have google earthed Kal, bigger than I thought it would be. Better go and pick miss 6 up from school. Sun is out today... although bit cold. I have read that there are daily flights into Kal, but for the life of me can't find any. What airline should I be looking for? Managed to find the train. Thanks.

58. Seeing that every one is introducing themselves
My name is Sashi and we moved to Ellenbrook Perth in January this year. My hubby worked for Bluechip Finance (yes dreaded bluechip) and was laid off last year in August. We decided to move to Perth as we had visited before and loved it and we had reached a crossroad in our life. It was now or never. I have two kids aged 4 and 17mths. Life was hard at first but things are getting easier as I am making friends slowly. There is no going back for us as we are here to stay and with most of our family moving over in the next year or so, there is no going back as no one left back home.

89. Emm
my hubby was the opposite at his work, they didn't think he was a kiwi as they didn't think he had an accent, lol!!!! Marcs, I don't think I have felt homesick at all since we have been here, maybe a teeny tiny bit at christmas but not really. Ever since I visited my friend in QLD 11 years ago, I sort of felt that I would eventually end up living in OZ, it just felt like home. Funny thing is my kids are going to know the Ozzie national athemn off by heart and not even know the NZ one, as they sing it every Thursday in assembly, now thats scary!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

139. oh really carcough,
we have been through custody things before and it is a long wait I hate it, but mind you the longr we wait the more we can save so will be easier to set up when we get there. I will keep yu posted on how it goes and if you could do the same too will be much appreciated. We have just filed a 12 page affidavit with a folder attatched with letters of support, maps, demographics, rental prices, situations vacant from newspapers from there, so hopefully that will help the judge make a more informed decision.

jason_cheri (65 ) 8:46 am, 1 Jul

140. thats good vickie, i wish we could
have such luck father soesnt want to let him go, although his parenting is uh non existant, he never sees son, he is a druggy, alcy women basher etc. He just wants to prolong us and cause us as much grief as possible. The system knows us pretty well and after 9 years the judge has had enough and will be happy to make a ruling im sure

141. cont .....
if you want to Google grandsangel you will come to an moving to oz site for kiwi and you will find the old posting for moving to oz and just read them it got what we had to do and others as well as a hold lot of information we got sick of losing our posting so they are all over there . good luck with court hopefully we have only one move court date at the most two so we are hoping to be there before xmas . 153. Hi Fluffy
As yet we have sold very little of the kids stuff. Apart from a couple of chests of drawers. The big crunch will come when they see their toys and things out and being sold (although we have been telling them that NEW ONES are a waiting!) Our next Court date is Aug 6th thats Lawyer for kids report and all Affidavits in,and set a date for FINAL (I hope)hearing. So we are looking Oct/Nov for that. Hang in there Gal you will come out on top in the end. Steve.

we STILL have NO clue on WHAT suburb to look at in Brisbane... Where are all the Brisbane-ites living? It's really quite frustrating ... Do you know of anyone who has found a rental being a dog owner? Because we're not moving until the end of the year it's probably premature to look but yet we need so much information as well to be prepared

Had the psycho thing done on her when we first got the kids (4yrs ago)And tried Mediation last time She didnt turn up for appointment ,and then when she did she made silly demands of the Mediator. This time we have given everything we can think of to the Courts, Maps Info booklets Rentals,Schools IHC info and how much more the little fella is going to be better off, even how much it will cost to fly her over each year to visit. you name it the Judge will know as much about Kal as I do!Most of all,all the info that shows we have been to all but one visitation (kids were sick) and how many she has missed.Nice doesnt come into it now, we have gone all out on this Case,Our best thing is the amount of stuff we have documented over the years and all the paperwork we have kept from the Courts to show she has done nothing to change things for herself or the kids. Go hard gal and give it all you have got! you really only get one shot at this! Steve.

171. #157
Personally, being a QLD'er I think that Annerly and Redhill and Normanby and areas around there are good places to live. Enoggera Creek area also and surrounding suburbs. I really wish that people take a good look at moving to Australia ,because it costs a lot and does take time and I am lucky to have Medicare , it takes you guys 2 years to get it as a resident (and doctors bills in Aust are very high) and soon it will be harder as Immigration laws are going to change at the end of this year from what I hear. But please make sure if you are going to move be really well imformed and learn from those who are over there and their experiences.

tramist (87 ) 10:30 pm, 1 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

172. correction to above
As a NZ'er it does not take you 2 years to get Medicare, you have to prove that you have moved to Australia permanently ie not visiting, by way of rental agreement, purchase of house etc for Aussie & provide 100 points of ID then you get it can be a bit of a rigmarole but not a major. If you earn over $50g & do not hv private medical insurance then you will pay an extra 1.5% of you wages as a Medicare levy.

dobbsygal (1096 ) 10:48 pm, 1 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

173. doctors bill
i don't think doctor's bills are expensive. my doctor costs $45, $53 on saturday. $32 of this is refunded by medicare

175. You can get your
medicare card as soon as you arrive. You need to take your passport in with you when you apply. Not sure what else is required. We had ours a week after we arrived in Feb.

Yes you are correct about that. I was mis-informed about what was going on in regards to Medicare. I know a lot of Kiwi's in Australia and esp in Sydney as I am member of the All Blacks Supporters Club. Kiwi's work hard and are fun to hang out with after work I think and have a nice attitude to life. Someone said their children did not know the Australian National Anthem... when I was a kid in QLD we learnt the NZ anthem in school, I thought they may have had the same thing here. But yeh in terms of the topic, I think it is good for kiwi's to have a go in Oz , it is far diff than NZ is.. I don't think I will ever not be watching out for snakes, spiders, scorpions and all sorts of other stuff as I walk in the scrub here, always had to watch where we walked and what we touched back home.

welcome back. Tylarsmum I came from the HB where you from. I was educated at NIS and NGHS finishing there in 1977. Good luck to those moving and waiting court cases. How did your first day go weena.

202. Hi srscjmc
I am not sure if I am giving the correct info so others please feel free to correct me. I found that prescription medicine ie general medicine not so cheap in Perth. My prescriptions cost $30 each even for repeats and this is for antidepressants. Kids are around $20. However for Diabetic medication I am not sure so hopefully there is someone here Type 1 or 2 that can give you some idea as to how much. This is the only thing that I have found is more expensive than home however don't be put off by it as I figure we earn a lot more here so we are able to cover it.

marcs (52 ) 12:22 pm, 2 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

203. Thanks
Yeah i hope that i do earn More An i hope that it isn't to expensive cause i work in the medical industry in NZ and i know that i real cost for my meds are over $200 per Month

210. Hi deflatedpumpkin
If you are only coming for 8 months then it is best to check with ird if you would be classed as a resident for tax purposes or a non resident?, you may have to declare your income earnt in Aus as foreign income, make sure you keep your wage receipts to prove total income earnt + taxes paid. good luck and I hope you make heaps.

214. Good afternoon everyone
Milly, we have been here for 4 weeks on Sunday. Weena I am waiting for my NZ police clearence to come through then I can start at the mine, I will be working with Totty, she did my interview, and yup i'ld be a bit scared driving one of those huge trucks too lol. Pet, I lived in Waipawa all my child hood and attended CHBC. I only moved to Hastings in the last 5 years. Just a question to you NZ people with primary aged children, do you find it weird the way they use their cut off for what class the kids will go in? Ive been at the school this morn coz Tylar misses out on being year 2 by 19 days, so that makes him have to sit year one again and will make him a year behind in NZ. Its crazy and a bit frustrating aye

tylarsmum (31 ) 5:30 pm, 2 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

215. Hi tylarsmum
I find the school thing frustrating here too. My girl is 4 in two weeks time but does not start kindy till next year. She misses out by 17 days lol. Back home she had started kindy. I have managed to find a 3 year old kindy which she goes to and thoroughly enjoys but she does not start the proper kindy till 2009. Second baby is alright as she was born in Jan.

Friends of mine have only been over here in Oz 2 yrs and reckon that the process of citizenship is not as easy as it used to be? They realise they don't really need it as kiwis basically get the same deal as us, but .... they WANT to! Anyone been down that track lately? Any help greatly received.

anyone else contemplating same time of year. To others moving over to Brissie, what AREAS / Suburb are you going to and why? How do we choose a suburb when we have no clue where we will be working?

theyeshaveit (1994 ) 6:06 pm, 2 Jul

222. mahairy, I found this info ....
New Zealanders can become Australian citizens without giving up their New Zealand citizenship. They have to obtain Australian permanent residence first, and must live in Australia as a permanent resident for at least two years before they can apply for citizenship... http://www.nzembassy.com/topic.cfm?c=18&l=60&s=nz

224. Hi theyeshaveit,
I tried doing it through Google, and still tiny, never mind, may be something to do with my computer settings, everything else seems normal though. We are also contemplating the move to either Brisbane or Townsville, we are going to Brisbane in October for a holiday, so will have a quick check around while we are there, we can't go until our cat dies lol, she is 18yrs old and I don't think she would pass a vet check otherwise we would take her, and wouldn't possibly dream about putting her to sleep, we will take our dog with us though.

233. with schools in some states
R is the first year then year 1 the second but you start highschool in year 8 the equivalent to NZ year 9, so yr daughter in year 3 is the same as year 4,in NZ, highschool iin our state is year 8 to year 12 which is 7th form, in NZ year 9 to 13, so its just numbers.

234. hhmmmm...
I've been here three years in October.I love it here, though I was homesick for the 1st year, I cried the 1st christmas, the whole day lol..The 3rd day I arrived in Brisbane there was a heat wave 42degrees,I thought I was going to die. There was an Aircon unit in our house, but I had no clue how it worked let alone realise that was what it was..I thought it was a heater..I still get lonely because I have no REALLY GOOD friends. Australians are lovley people and very friendly. I wouldn't say we a financially better off but we are earning more than what we were on in NZ.We have given up our dream of owning a home because of the house prices ski rocketing, BUT there are other pluses..Lifestle, weather etc..In order to make it work for you, you have to take the highs and lows..and there are a few when you move to another country...

But its blardy bonza beauty ripper mate here two days in a row. We are a bit far away to help with highschools, depends on your location and how far the children want to walk or ride bikes to get there. What part of Cairns are you moving to. so what is for
dinner milly, I could do with some ideas. We have eaten very well this week, might do something really easy....like what? Jamie (18.5 yr old son) loves food but is a bit "fussy"

252. well done ashlee
goodness milly you will be proud, she has done so well since she went back, you had better give her a pat on the back. Think of the money you can save with a hairdresser in the family.

253. Jobs
For those that are wanting to know about mining jobs, I heard on the radio Rio Tinto was looking for people. May want to google them to see what is available. Rio Tinto is Iron Ore mining I think.

Have just had a visit from Lawyer for the kids."He gave us a heads up" as to what the Judge is going to be looking for! O K.here goes.Info on school that child/ children will be attending.(hard when schools are zoned, but go on line and pick one and email for ALL the info you can. Special needs or Health issues, make sure you have info covering these. (most info can be got on line).Jobs! any you may have already applied for or are going to,take copies and submit them in your paperwork.Family, any you have in Aus, where, when, how long have they been there, (friends, contacts put the lot in.) In short bury the sods in paper and show you have done homework. Sports for youngsters, find clubs etc (I can help there) Cont!

millyone21 (0 ) 5:06 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

256. Cheri
Cont! Give us a note and I will find info for sports and Addys. I can also give you a place to pick up a car when you arrive (2nd hand but good cars)All the info you can think of will help. I have been advised to find my mums Birth Cert to prove she was Aussie born. (bloody hard now, she has been dead for a few years) thats the level the Judge we have will go to! Best of luck and hope this helps a little. Steve.

farcough81 (10 ) 5:12 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

257. farcouch...
just apply to birth deaths and marriages for a copy of her birth cert. Costs about $26 from memory. Sorry I've been a kinda lurker and watching posts.

lost-in-oz (0) 5:14 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

258. was just
going to mention that, can get the paperwork online. We had to get one for our friend (from Murchison) so he could get a bank a/c. As long as you are sure of dates and birthdates, they will find it without a search. Good Luck, get packin'.

pet61 (0) 5:17 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

259. Milly
you scared the whatsits out of me!! I posted to Cheri and darn it it wasnt on the page, PANIC !!!all that typing and I lost it. Then saw we were on another page already.LOL Not nice and I havent even asked what meat is in the stir fry!! steve.

farcough81 (10 ) 5:17 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

260. one other hint for you guys that are going through
court to move. Make sure you have your NZ orders registered in Aus or unfortunately you don't have a damn leg to stand on if the other party doesnt abide by something. We know through hard experience. The state and federal police wont do a damn thing without them being registered here. They don't even when they are unfortunately.

lost-in-oz (0) 5:21 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

261. Lost in Aus
Mums place of Birth is on my Birth Cert so that takes care of that. Just had to laugh a bit though when thinking "a Flash and she was ash, how the hell do I contact her now!"LOL. (Knowing that old Gal she would come back and Haunt the hell out of me!) LOL. Steve.

farcough81 (10 ) 5:22 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

262. seance? oija board? psychic?
Watch it lol...she'll misplace that birth cert when you most need it. Just to let you know shes watchin.

263. Lost in Aus
Thanks for the tip. It was something we hadnt thought of. Steve.

farcough81 (10 ) 5:28 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

264. have to go to town
bye for now all, take care.

pet61 (0) 5:29 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

265. no worries.
Doesnt cost you anything. You ask your case officer at court and he sent all orders made to central authority who send them to same in Aus. You get a piece of paper to say they are registered there. We have ours registered in two states. An NZ judge might look more favourable if you've done that bit of your homework too. If you're claiming for child support when you get here, its freakin expensive! CS here dont take any new families into account so you pay through the nose - even when the child has been snatched! (thats a blardy longgg story)

lost-in-oz (0) 5:31 pm, 3 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

266. Lost in Aus
Your a right little Font of info. Wish we had been in touch a while ago. Our Grands are our Sons kiddies and we have no trouble with him. Boy o Boy!!
We recieved an E Mail last night from a Lady from RUCSN (Resorce Unit Children Special Needs)In Kal. We had made contact some time ago, looking for info to help us with our Down Grandson. As I started, Boy O Boy the help and assistance that is avalible for Special Needs Kiddies (and Adults) has just blown us away.It really makes NZ a third world unit for care in this area.Angie and I are just so grateful that we will be in a position to give this little bloke the leg up he so deserves.Roll on Aug the 6th.(next hearing in Court) Have a good evening all. Steve. P S Fonsay hope you little one is ok.

I had to repair a laptop that happened to recently. As long as you take the battery out and don't use it at all , it is repairable and a lot better than buying a new one. Fluffy, glad to see you have got things in order and can move on finally.

Steve/Angie
Yeah Thanks she is getting better. She had an eye infection, so the quickest and fastest way to get rid of it was with IV anti-botics. She was very brave when she had the line inserted, (Dad was very white). The children's ward was full so not alot of sleep was had, especially on a squeaky lazyboy. Poor wee kids.

346. Capital Gains Tax ...
for those that have made the move recently and had to sell a house in NZ ... can you tell me if the capital gains tax applies if you sell a NZ house once you are residing in Aus? We are hoping to get a job, send hubby over first and then sell the house (if it doesn't sell first), but someone said today that if you have made plans to move to Aus (such as a job acceptance, school enrollment etc) then technically they can take capital gains tax on your sale of NZ property. Is this true? Thanks

Kids are being a pain with having to be inside.(OH! the beauty of having little ones again) Im off to set traps this afternoon when they are down for a nap, heres hoping the possums are still packing on the fir. No snow here, but might as well have its that cold! Snow in Rotorua last night and road between Tauranga and Cambridge is closed by snow. darn I hope this Judge says "No need for full hearing, you lot bugger off" Silly Tart text yesterday to ask if there was Visitation! She has done nothing to set up new meeting point and now with school holidays there wont be any visits until Barnardos open again after schools return! We go back to Court again the first week of school so she has missed out altogether! (oh dear how sad, nevermind) Off to split some wood. Steve.

362. fonsay there are heaps of dance schools in Kal
I can think of 3 off the top of my head. One of my customers owns one. Her email is danceboutique@bigpond.com, her name is Nerida. Capital gains tax on a NZ house is not applicable in OZ for the person that asked.

Only the little boy "Kerry" is Downs. There aint nothing slow about this fella! He is a little tike at the best of times and a fair little shite the rest.He is a very high functioning Downs and will fit in most anywhere, but we do have problems with his speech. He knows the words just refuses to use them until he wants to.Then again why should he speak when his brother and sister say everything for him!! Im sure Aussie schooling will be better, thats one reason we are going. Steve.

414. For property rentals
we found www.reiwa.com.au quite good. However when you get here you will find that the agents have a lot more listed then on this website. Make sure you bring references from your neighbours or land lords as you will need this. Also if you have just sold your house then bring a reference from that agent too.

pet61 I,d be happy to have 22dgs, we,re lucky if it gets to 10 here, have,nt heard anything about bad weather anywhere, its fine & mild here today, the weather predictor fella says we,re in for snow between the 17th-20th, he,s usually pretty accurate so we,ll wait & see!!!!

422. Thanks Angie
I was wondering what it meant, couple of sites said level 3/class 3 or level 5/class 5. We want to choose a school then we'll know what area to rent in.

fonsay (211 ) 3:41 pm, 9 Jul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

423. Fonsay
Most of the schools have email address email them and ask for there information on there school . Say you are moving over and if you know that they are, a level 3 /class 3 ask them what that's means in relation to there school . Angie

424. Thanx
4 your help. Iv been looking on realestate.com.au but find it really hard to know where the nicer areas are etc. and ppl tell me it is really difficult to get a house from them if your living in New Zealand due to many ppl applying? is this true? howd did everyone find a place to live? Also we are keeping our home in New Zealand as we are only planning of moving over for a year to begin with. What kind of documents do we need to show we pay our mortgage etc? as we only have 1 reference for renting. thanx for ya help again, really apreciate it

rental`s are a bit tricky to get into, there isnt enough houses in Kal..(but oh so many on the market) we live in Boulder, apparently it used to be the place that you wouldnt shift too..but we love it,only see the neighbours occasionally(if the rugby ball comes over the fence) im sure but Kelly is right up with this infor, that the agents prefer to see you in the flesh, rather than a e.mail..plus they set up a "viewing time",and there could be quite a few people go to the view 1 house, and then its "luck of the draw"..do you guys have any family/friends over here?? because they might be your best option..

438. Wendy your John is a big softie who I think
knows you very well. He kept saying he knew what you would and wouldn't live in. The best part is the location... close enough for us to crawl to after a hard day at the racetrack, lol. Oh but back to the softie part, I was eavesdropping on all the boys drinking out the back one night and they were talking about their women and John said, "Wendy is my rock, I couldn't survive without her". I would've laughed if it wasn't so damn sweet!

Another fine day here in the BOP. Pouring with rain but at least it isnt Frosty and cold. Counting down the days before we are back in Court to see if we can Leave this God forsaken Place! Never mind, Shay and Nathaniel will be here for a visit next month so thats something to look forward to. Have a good one people. Steve.

450. Hi from Sydney
Read your very interesting thread, and just have to say that Australia is a fabulous place to move too. Although there is a shortage of work here. The majority of jobs are in the larger cities like Sydney and Melbourne, but bear in mind that while most jobs are in those locations, the rents are also extremely high. Why not log onto domain.com.au to get an idea of rental prices in different locations. For employemnt we have seek.com.au and mycareer.com.au, these will also help you get an idea what jobs are going and where.
